Ahead of our Centum Contemporary Art Auction, we invited Miriam to share her five favourite pieces from the collection.

TROY EMERY (born 1981) Black Opal 2019. $4,000 – $6,000

1. Lot 6 – TROY EMERY, Black Opal 2019

I love the tactility of this sculpture; the tinsel’s reflection and lustre reveal the shape and form. The curiosity of this figure brings a smile to my face, it’s animated and beautiful. I have coveted one of Emery’s works for a long time, this would look great on a high-gloss plinth in a CBD penthouse we’re procuring pieces for.

REKO RENNIE (born 1974) Camo OA 2024. $20,000 – $30,000

2. Lot 14 – REKO RENNIE, Camo OA 2024

This piece captures a vivid contemporary expression of First Nations art; the layering of the geometric with the organic creates a striking depth. The symmetry of the piece paired with the flow of form and colour complexity is visually appealing. Seeing Rekospective at the NGV and how Rennie’s pieces tell his story helped me understand the deeper meaning behind why he paints, and the intersection of his First Nations identity, culture and politics. I have some of his work at home and they bring me so much joy, I’d love to specify them more in our projects.

PAUL DAVIES (born 1979) Home and Pool 2013. $9,000 – $12,000

3. Lot 35 – PAUL DAVIES, Home and Pool 2013

Paul Davies work portrays classic modernist architecture in a bold artistic impression. As an interior designer, I resonate with his interpretation of architecture using shape, perspective and colour. This piece illustrates the converging of modernism, realism and the blurring of the built and natural worlds. I could look at this artwork every day, imagining myself in this setting.

ILDIKO KOVACS (born 1962) Blue Line 2002. $18,000 – $25,000

4. Lot 36 – ILDIKO KOVACS, Blue Line 2002

I have always admired Kovacs’ work and wanted to own one. This artwork is a beautiful example of how to make linework dance, there is an energetic feeling and physical depth that appears like it’s lifting off the canvas. The linework is soft yet irrational, it makes me ponder why I like it so much – I just do!

ZHONG CHEN (born 1969) Shaolin Spin Combo 2001. $15,000 – $25,000

5. Lot 48 – ZHONG CHEN, Shaolin Spin Combo 2001

There’s something about Chen’s work that draws me in, especially his earlier work like this piece. I admire how Chen’s painting melds contemporary and cultural motifs, blending his Chinese heritage with a more modern, digital-like interpretation. The elements in this piece are soothing and encourage me to look deeper into the canvas. Even my son wants one of his pieces!
