The Stock in Trade of Brighton Antiques

A single owner auction featuring antique furniture, objects and artworks.  The auction is a feature of the Antique & Interiors Auction Lots 1001 – 1126. What began as a hobby 41 years ago soon turned into a full-time job for David and Heather Matthews, the proprietors of Brighton Antiques.  When the Matthews’ began trading from 122 Bay Street, Brighton in 1972, such was the demand for Victorian furniture and objects that Heather was able to leave her job as a professional violinist and manage the shop full-time.

62Initially the Matthews’ lived at the back of their first Bay Street premises, but  later moved to the opposite end of the row of four shops and re-established their business in number 120, where it has been ever since.  During the proceeding decades, David and Heather would source antiques for some of Brighton’s best known identities.  Amusingly, David recounts with irony visits from Hobart antique dealers, stocking up on goods to sell to Melbourne tourists visiting the then new Wrest Point Casino!

During the last few years, changes in demand from customers and competing demands from David’s other businesses has meant that the shop has been open by appointment only.  Tomorrow, the contents of Brighton Antiques will be dispersed by public auction from 12pm as part of Leonard Joel’s Antique and Interiors Auction, to be held at Leonard Joel’s salerooms at 333 Malvern Road South Yarra.
