Leonard Joel and William Mora are delighted to announce that 31 pieces from The Magical Studio of Mirka Mora have been acquired by Heide Museum of Modern Art prior to auction, for their permanent collection.

The 31 hand-selected items, from almost 800 Lots within the auction, include Mirka’s final, unfinished easel painting and one of a series of slate paintings by Sidney Nolan portraying his then lover, Sunday Reed. Also included in the selection is one of the artist’s paint boxes, her easel and a bristle-brush, which once belonged to Sidney Nolan.

Curated in close collaboration with the artist’s family, The Magical Studio of Mirka Mora recreates the spirit of Mirka’s home-studio, offering a compelling insight into her life through not only her works of art but also through the eclectic objects she collected and from which she drew daily inspiration.

Leading the Fine Art section of works still available is a rare, mixed media mural (Lot 223, estimate $60,000-80,000) which was painted in the 1970s and which once hung in Tolarno’s Restaurant. The large-scale work, which measures 120 x 224cm, features all of Mirka’s signature motifs and in the words of her son, ‘represents Mirka’s world of magic and wonder; of colour and hope, joy, love and all that is positive in humanity. As one scans the surface, new and beautiful vignettes appear and the intrigue of Mirka’s unique vision unfolds.’

The auction features 40 other paintings and drawings by Mirka, as well as works of art gifted to her by friends and contemporaries such as Charles Blackman and John Perceval. William Mora has said of Mirka’s studio, ‘Those who visited entered a magical world where Mirka held court. She loved to be surrounded by people, but also by all of her ‘things’ as they inspired her and each had a story to tell.’

The remainder of the almost 800 lot auction includes over 1,000 books – her vast library includes art history and history, French and Greek literature, poetry, embroidery and cookery books – as well as antique dolls, toys, ceramics, embroideries and art materials.
